The Sun Run Weekend has officially begun as the teams from YMR Track Club & Karhu meet up at the camp in Rovaniemi. Although two brands are based in Sweden & Finland respectively, the teams are made up of runners and brand representatives from all over the globe. We have teams members joining from the US, Holland, Belgium, France and of course Sweden & Finland. All coming together to share a love for running and the camaraderie it creates.
As the teams gather at base camp, YMR Track Club Founder Peter Häggström Lindecrantz & Karhu’s Global Running Manger Jordan Kinley share some opening remarks an welcome everyone to the Sun Run Weekend.
With the teams ready to go and kitted out in the new Sun Run Collection and Ikoni Sneakers, we set out for our first morning session. Beginning with a short warm up run with a few laps around the first 600m trail. No surprises that our star team member Mustafa ‘Musse’ Mohamed leads the pack and sets the pace for the rest of the team.
Warm up complete and the team moves location a short distance away from our warm up spot. Now the team would run through Finnish forest and over cliffs in a more scenic route. With Musse leading the way, the team break off into smaller groups as we have runners across all levels and athletic backgrounds sharing in the experience. Our aim is not to race, but to bring people together and have fun and bond as we run. As the session comes to an end the team heads back to camp for lunch and a well earned rest!
After a short afternoon trip into downtown Rovaniemi to watch the Sweden vs Slovakia football match, our team headed back out for the evening run. The original running route was changed after we spotted a group of reindeer across the river from our camp. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, we set out to run with the reindeer.
The team then ran back across the river onto a straight country road which they would continue on for roughly another 7-8km. Running in various groups according to pace, this was a great opportunity to take in the scenery of rural Rovaniemi and share some laughs and good conversation along the way.
With a long day of running completed, the whole team headed back to base camp for dinner and bed. There was just enough time for a small number of the group to cool off with a quick swim in the river by camp. A fitting end to a eventful and unforgettable first day of the Sun Run Weekend!
