Our third and final day of the Sun Run Weekend began with some light training drills at base camp, led by YMR Track Club Founder and former Olympic athlete Peter Häggström. A group session working on our running technique and learning some small details which can help athletes gain that extra tenth of a second in a race.
Following the morning drills, some of the team opted to take a 10k run close to Rovaniemi centre whilst the rest of the group enjoyed some chilled time at camp. Shortly after lunch, it was time to leave base camp and leave Rovaniemi to head towards the Swedish border where we would take our final run.
A 2 hour drive down to Aavasaksa which lies right on the border between Finland and Sweden. With the team ready and waiting for the final push, our weekend guide Ossi from Rovaniemi Running Tours gave a short talk about the original Sun Run race which took place over 30 years ago. A celebration of the relationship between two great Scandinavian countries and the bonds created through and mutual love of running.
Now in 2021, Karhu from Finland and YMR Track Club from Sweden have brought the Sun Run back to life and shared 3 days of hard running, team bonding and new experiences. Under the constant day light and beautiful scenery of Lappland, this has been weekend to remember!
Ready, set, go! The team sets off for the final 5km run of the Sun Run towards the Swedish border. One last chance to share some miles and some laughs. The team runs at a similar pace to one another so we can be one group making the run across the border. Sweden was in sight across the Aavasaksa Bridge which crosses the river Tornionjoki. Downhill run for the final stretch of the Sun Run, the team crosses the bridge and the border from Finland into Sweden.
A fitting way to end our journey and celebrate the collaboration between the Finland’s Karhu and Sweden’s YMR Track Club. With one foot in Finland and one foot in Sweden, this was an unforgettable moment and it was a privilege to share it with such a great group of people.
All that is left to say is a huge thank you to the whole team involved in the planning and execution of the Sun Run Weekend and collection launch. Special thanks to our collaborative partners Karhu for sharing this journey with us. That’s a wrap for the Sun Run 2021!
